What Are the Akashic Records? A Simple, Honest Guide

The Akashic Records are the energy record of your soul’s journey – every thought, choice, relationship and lesson, in this life and the lives before it. Reading them is a skill. You open the Records with a sacred prayer, ask clear questions, and get guidance on why your life is unfolding the way it is.

That is the short answer. Now let me give you the honest one.

Where the word comes from

Akasha (आकाश) is Sanskrit. It means space, or ether. The fifth element. The one that holds the other four.

Indian seers spoke of a subtle field where everything leaves an impression. Nothing is lost. Every action writes itself somewhere. We called it karma, and we called the space that holds it akasha.

Our tradition even has a word for those impressions: saṃskāra (संस्कार) – the marks every experience leaves on the soul. They are why some patterns feel older than you.

The English name “Akashic Records” came much later, in the late 1800s, through a spiritual group in the West called the Theosophists. Later, the American healer Edgar Cayce made it famous. He said he read from these Records in thousands of readings.

So the West gave it a name. India had the idea long before that.

What the Akashic Records actually hold

Think of it as your soul’s file. Not a file someone keeps on you. A file you keep, life after life.

It holds:

• Your soul’s purpose – what you came here to learn and give.
• Your soul contracts – the agreements you made with the people who matter most, including the ones who hurt you most. In Sanskrit this bond is called ṛṇānubandhana (ऋणानुबन्धन) – a connection created by a debt between souls.
• Your patterns – why you keep choosing the same kind of partner, the same kind of boss, the same kind of fight.
• Past lives – the lifetimes that still echo in your fears, your talents and your sudden, unexplained loves.
• Your possibilities – not a fixed future, but the paths that are open to you now.

Notice the last one. The Records are not a fortune-teller. They do not say “this will happen on Tuesday.” They show you the energy you are carrying, so you can choose differently.

Is this science? Let’s be honest

No. Science has not proven the Akashic Records exist. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

But here is what is interesting. Science keeps arriving at the same doorstep.

The scientist and philosopher Ervin Laszlo wrote a whole book called Science and the Akashic Field. His idea is simple: the universe may store information, like a hard disk that never gets deleted.

Another example. Researcher Rachel Yehuda studied the children of Holocaust survivors. She found that stress can change how certain genes work – and this change can pass from parent to child. So pain can travel to the next generation, even when nobody talks about it.

The Akashic Records have been saying this for thousands of years. They just called it karma, and lineage, and memory of the soul.

I trained as a computer engineer. I did an MBA. I do not ask anyone to switch off their mind. I ask them to notice where the mind runs out of answers, and what is waiting there.

Who can access the Akashic Records?

Anyone. This is the part most people do not expect.

You do not need to be born psychic. You do not need a special gift. Accessing the Records is closer to learning a language than receiving a miracle. There is a method. There is a prayer to open them and close them. There is practice.

What you do need:

• A clear intention. Curiosity is fine. Testing the Records “to see if they’re real” usually gets you static.
• Grounding. A calm body receives clearly. A busy, anxious mind hears only its own noise.
• Good questions. More on this below. It is the biggest difference between a vague reading and a life-changing one.
• Ethics. You open your own Records, or someone else’s only with their permission. Always.

What happens in an Akashic Records reading

When someone comes to me for a reading, it goes like this.

We start with your questions. Then I open your Records with a sacred prayer. The energy in the room changes. Many people feel it – a warmth, a stillness, sometimes tears before anything has even been said.

I ask your questions and share what comes through. It comes as words, images, feelings, sometimes a past-life scene. You can ask follow-up questions. Nothing is rushed.

Then I close the Records. Most people leave with clarity on something that has been sitting heavy for months, sometimes years.

Questions that open the Records (and questions that close them)

The Records respond to “why” and “how.” They go quiet on “when” and “will he.”

Questions that work:

• What is the soul lesson in this relationship?
• Why do I keep attracting the same kind of partner?
• What am I carrying from my family line that is not mine?
• What is blocking me from moving forward in my work?
• What does my soul want me to know right now?

Questions that don’t:

• Will I get married this year?
• Is he coming back?
• Which stock should I buy?

It’s not that these are bad questions. They just hand your power to the answer. The Records will always hand it back to you.

The Gita says it simply: karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana (कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन) – your right is to your action, never to the fruit. The Records work the same way. They show you the action. The choice stays yours.

Yes, when it’s done with a clean method.

The Records themselves are a space of love. They don’t judge, and they don’t frighten. What can feel heavy is what you bring up – old grief, an old betrayal, a memory you’d forgotten you were carrying. That is not danger. That is healing starting.

Open with the prayer. Close with the prayer. Don’t read for others without consent. Don’t use a reading to replace a doctor, a therapist or your own common sense.

Can an Akashic reading be done online?

Yes. Distance does not matter. A reading over Zoom works just as well as one in the same room.

Which religion do the Akashic Records belong to?

None. The idea has roots in Indian thought, but people of every faith use the Records. You don’t have to change your beliefs.
