Oracle cards are cards with pictures and short messages that you use for guidance and self-reflection. Unlike tarot, which always has 78 cards in a fixed system, every oracle deck has its own number of cards and its own theme. That freedom is why oracle cards are usually the easier place for a beginner to start.
Let me explain it simply.
What are oracle cards?
Oracle cards are a deck of picture cards, each with a word, a short message or a theme, used to reflect on your life and get guidance. You ask a question, pick a card, and use its image and message to look at your situation with fresh eyes.
What are oracle cards used for? Mostly for three things:
- Daily guidance – one card in the morning to set the tone for the day.
- Self-reflection – to understand a feeling, a fear or a choice more clearly.
- Healing work – many decks, including mine, are made to help you see what needs to be released or forgiven.
I like to think of a card as a mirror. It does not tell you who you are. It helps you see what is already there. In my own work the cards connect with the Akashic Records – the idea of a soul-level record held in ākāśa (आकाश), which means space. If you are new to that idea, my simple guide to the Akashic Records is a good place to begin.
Oracle vs tarot: what is the difference?
Tarot is a fixed system of 78 cards with set meanings. Oracle decks have any number of cards and each deck follows its own theme. So no, an oracle deck is not the same as a tarot deck, even though they look alike on the table.
| Oracle cards | Tarot cards | |
|---|---|---|
| Number of cards | Any number (30, 44, 85, 88…) | Always 78 |
| Structure | Each deck has its own theme and rules | 22 Major Arcana + 56 Minor Arcana in four suits |
| Meanings | Written in that deck’s guidebook | Traditional meanings, shared across most decks |
| Learning time | You can start on day one | Takes longer to learn well |
| Best for | Gentle guidance, healing, daily reflection | Detailed readings of a situation |
If you want to compare Akashic work with tarot and astrology more broadly, I wrote about that in Akashic Records vs tarot vs astrology.
How to use oracle cards for beginners
Hold the deck, breathe, ask one clear question, shuffle, pick a card and read its message. Then notice what you feel first, before you read the guidebook. That first feeling is often the real answer.
Here are the simple steps I teach:
- 1. Sit quietly. Two minutes is enough. Put your phone face down.
- 2. Hold the deck. Keep it in both hands, close to your heart, and take three slow breaths.
- 3. Ask one clear question. Say it in your mind or out loud. One question at a time.
- 4. Shuffle. There is no wrong way. You can shuffle like playing cards, mix them face down on a table, or cut the deck into three piles and put them back together.
- 5. Pick your card. Stop when it feels right, or take the card that jumps out while you shuffle. Jumping cards often carry a message too.
- 6. Look before you read. What colour, image or word catches you? What do you feel in your body?
- 7. Read the guidebook. Now see what the deck says, and connect it to your question.
- 8. Write one line. Keep a small notebook. Over weeks, you will see your own story more clearly.
Many people want to know: how to shuffle oracle cards “properly”? Honestly, the cards do not mind. What matters is that your mind is calm and your question is clear.

What questions should I ask oracle cards?
Ask open questions that help you understand, not yes-or-no questions about the future. “What do I need to know today?” works much better than “Will he call me?”
Good questions to ask your oracle deck:
- What do I need to know today?
- What is this situation teaching me?
- What is blocking me right now?
- What am I not seeing clearly?
- What can I let go of this week?
Oracle card questions about love:
- What do I need to heal before I can receive love?
- What is this relationship asking me to learn?
- How can I show up with more honesty in this bond?
The same rule applies when you go deeper into soul-level work: open questions bring the clearest answers.
Which oracle deck is best for beginners?
The best oracle deck for a beginner is one whose images speak to you and which has a clear, simple guidebook. Do not buy a deck only because it is popular.
Here is what I would check, honestly, before you buy any deck:
- The images. Do you feel something when you look at them? If not, the deck will sit in a drawer.
- The guidebook. Are the messages clear and kind, or vague and heavy?
- The theme. Pick a theme that matches what you need now – healing, relationships, clarity.
- Card quality. You will shuffle these a lot. Thin cards bend and tear.
Now, the decks I have created. I made each one for a different need:
| Deck | Cards | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Akashic Healing Oracle Deck | 85 | Healing and beginners |
| Divine Feminine Mahakali Akashic Oracle | 88 | Truth, boundaries, release, Maa Kali energy |
| Divine Masculine Akashic Tarot | 78 | A tarot-structured deck with an Akashic lens |
| Time Healing Oracle Cards | 30 | Healing your relationship with past, present and future |
| Shiva-Shakti Akashic Oracle | See the books page | Balance of masculine and feminine energy |
If you are just starting, the Akashic Healing Oracle Deck is the one I made with beginners in mind. The Divine Union Collection brings the Divine Masculine Akashic Tarot and the Divine Feminine Mahakali Akashic Oracle together as a pair. You can see all of them on my books and decks page, and I wrote a longer post on the 5 Akashic oracle decks worth actually owning.
Are oracle cards accurate? Can they predict the future?
Oracle cards are best for guidance, not prediction. They reflect what is going on inside you right now, and that is where their real use is.
I will be honest with you: there is no scientific proof that cards can predict the future. What they do well is slow you down and show you a feeling or a choice you were avoiding. Your future is not written on a card. It is shaped by your karma (कर्म), which simply means your actions, and by the choices you make once you see clearly. So do oracle cards work? Yes, as a mirror. Not as a fortune teller. And please, for health, money or legal decisions, talk to a doctor, adviser or lawyer, not a deck.
Are there Indian oracle decks?
Yes. My decks, like the Divine Feminine Mahakali Akashic Oracle and the Akashic Healing Oracle Deck, are made in India, by an Indian teacher based in Bengaluru, with Indian spiritual roots.
When I made my decks, I wanted an Indian seeker to look at a card and feel at home – to see Maa Kali, Shiva and Shakti, and ideas like saṃskāra (संस्कार), the impressions left by past experience, in a language that feels familiar.
What is the Mahakali oracle deck?
The Divine Feminine Mahakali Akashic Oracle is an 88-card deck I created, built around Maa Kali’s energy of truth, boundaries and release.
Maa Kali is the fierce mother. She cuts what is false so that what is true can breathe. This deck is for the times when you are tired of pretending – when you need to say no, end something, or finally see a situation for what it is. It is not a scary deck. It is a deeply loving one, in the way a mother who tells you the truth is loving.

Quick answers
Is using oracle cards a sin or witchcraft?
Oracle cards are a reflection tool, not black magic. How you see them depends on your own faith, and I respect that. Used for quiet self-reflection, there is no harm in them.
Can you mix oracle decks?
Yes. Many readers pull from two decks together – one card for the message and one for the healing or action to take.
Do I need to be gifted to read oracle cards?
No. Anyone can use oracle cards. The guidebook helps you start, and your understanding grows with practice.
How often should I use my oracle deck?
One card a day is plenty. If you keep pulling cards on the same question, you are looking for a different answer, not a clearer one.
Is an oracle card reading the same as an Akashic reading?
No. Cards are a tool. An Akashic reading goes into the soul-level story behind a situation. The two can also work well together.
A deck never really finishes teaching you. Some days the message is gentle. Some days it says exactly what you did not want to hear. Both kinds of days teach something. Start with one card, one question and an honest heart, and let the deck become a quiet friend you keep coming back to.
