Why Do I Feel Stuck in Life? The Spiritual Meaning and How to Find Your Soul Purpose

Neha Singla, Akashic Records teacher, Bengaluru

You usually feel stuck in life because an old fear, belief or unfinished story is still running quietly inside you, even when everything outside looks fine. In the Akashic view, stuckness is often the soul repeating something it has not yet completed. The first way out is simply to see it clearly – once you can name what is holding you, it starts to loosen.

If you are reading this at 1 am with a heavy chest, you are not alone, and you are not broken.

Why do I feel stuck in life?

Most people feel stuck because some part of them is still living by an old rule – “I must not fail”, “I must keep everyone happy”, “people like me don’t get that”. The body keeps going to work, but the heart has stopped moving forward.

Stuckness usually shows up in a few common ways:

  • You have the job, the family, the routine – and still feel flat inside.
  • You make a plan every January and by March it has quietly died.
  • You know what you want, but your hands will not start.
  • You keep waiting for “the right time”, and the right time keeps moving.

None of this means you are lazy. It usually means you are tired, or scared, or carrying something that is not fully yours. I wrote more about this in why you can feel stuck even when you are doing everything right.

Why do I feel stuck in life: the spiritual meaning

Spiritually, feeling stuck often means your soul is asking you to finish something old before it lets you start something new. It is not a punishment. It is a pause with a message.

In Indian thought, every experience leaves a saṃskāra (संस्कार) – an impression left by experience. A fear you felt at age eight, a loss in your family, a promise you made to yourself to stay small and safe – these impressions keep guiding your choices long after the event is over. You think you are deciding freely, but the old groove decides for you.

There is also prārabdha karma (प्रारब्ध कर्म), the karma already set in motion for this life. Some situations you were born into, like your family or certain early struggles, are part of this. You cannot always change the starting point. But you can change how you walk from here.

In Akashic work, stuckness is often linked to one of these:

  • An old story from childhood that still says “it is not safe to want more”.
  • A family pattern – a mother who never chose herself, a father who was never allowed to rest.
  • An unfinished bond with a person you have not truly let go of.
  • A wrong path – you are walking someone else’s road, and your soul is pulling the brake.

Why do I feel blocked or trapped in life?

Feeling blocked usually means fear is stopping a step you already want to take. Feeling trapped usually means you believe you have no choices left, even when a few small ones still exist.

The two feel different in the body. Blocked feels like a wall in front of you – “I want to go, but I can’t”. Trapped feels like walls on all sides – “there is no way out”. Imagine a woman who wants to leave a job that drains her. If she is blocked, she is afraid of what people will say. If she is trapped, she believes she cannot survive without that salary. Both need care, but they need different first steps. Blocked needs courage. Trapped needs one small, real option to be seen.

Science also gives us a little hope here. Neuroplasticity means the brain can change its patterns. A groove that has run for twenty years can still be rewired, slowly, with new choices repeated.

How to know your soul purpose

Your soul purpose usually hides in three places: what you would do even without pay, the pain you have turned into wisdom, and the thing that keeps calling you back no matter how many times you ignore it.

In Sanskrit we have a beautiful word for this: dharma (धर्म), your right path or duty. Dharma is not always a grand mission. Sometimes it is being a good teacher, a fair boss, a parent who breaks a cycle. Purpose is less about a title and more about the way you show up.

The Bhagavad Gita (2.47) says: karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana (कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन) – your right is to your action, never to the fruit. This one line can change how you see stuckness. So much stuckness comes from waiting to be sure of the result before we take a step. The Gita says: take the step. The fruit is not your job.

5 simple steps to get unstuck and find your purpose

Take a notebook and give each step one quiet evening. Write by hand if you can. Do not try to sound wise. Just be honest.

  • 1. Name the stuck place. Ask: “Where exactly do I feel stuck – work, love, money, health, or myself?” Pick one. You cannot untie every knot at once.
  • 2. Find the old rule. Ask: “What am I afraid will happen if I move?” and “Whose voice is this – mine, my mother’s, my father’s, society’s?”
  • 3. Look at your pain. Ask: “What is the hardest thing I have lived through, and what did it teach me that I could give to someone else?” Purpose often grows from here.
  • 4. Follow the calling. Ask: “What topic or work do I keep coming back to, even when I tell myself it is not practical?” and “What would I do for free on a Sunday?”
  • 5. Take one small action. Ask: “What is one step I can take in the next seven days that costs less than one hour?” Then do it, and remember Gita 2.47 – the step is yours, the result is not.

Read your answers after a week. You will often find one sentence that makes your chest go quiet. That sentence is a clue.

Can a life purpose reading help?

Yes. An Akashic reading can show the deeper story behind your stuckness – which old impression, family pattern or soul bond is holding you – and what your soul came here to do.

In a 1:1 Akashic reading with me, we look at your question from the soul level. For purpose and stuckness, the Full Reading (70-90 minutes, generally 3-5 questions or one situation in depth) usually gives enough space. A reading does not decide for you. It gives you clarity, and the choices stay yours.

Quick answers

Is feeling stuck a sign of spiritual awakening?

Sometimes. Often the old way of living stops working before the new way is clear. That in-between space feels like stuckness.

Can feeling stuck be karmic?

It can be. Some situations are part of prārabdha karma, but how you respond to them is still your choice.

How long does it take to get unstuck?

There is no fixed time. Small honest steps, repeated, usually move things faster than one big dramatic decision.

Can I have more than one soul purpose?

Yes. Purpose can change with each stage of life. What served you at 25 may not be your path at 45.

What if I still cannot find my purpose?

Start with what makes you feel even slightly alive, and do more of it. Purpose is often found by walking, not by thinking.

Is feeling stuck the same as depression?

Not always, but they can overlap. If stuckness feels like deep sadness or hopelessness that will not lift, please talk to a doctor or counsellor too. A reading or journal does not replace medical or therapy support.

Feeling stuck is not the end of your story. It is often the soul clearing its throat before it speaks. You may get unstuck in one area and feel stuck again in another, years later. That is not failure. That is just the next layer asking to be seen, and each time, you will know a little more about how to listen.
